Lose Weight Around the Middle

Having excess weight around the middle is very common, in fact more common than not with way more than half of the UK adult population coming in as overweight or obese.

Everyone is able to reduce weight around the middle, it just takes a bit of education, effort and dedication.

Read this list and answer the questions as you go, then assess your habits and identify the changes you need to make.

  • Have you actively reduced or eliminated junk and beige food? Beige food is usually ultra processed foods like chips, bread, cake, crisps, biscuits etc.

  • Are you regularly drinking sugary drinks? Juices, many smoothies, syrupy coffees, bubble teas and fizzy drinks all contain an alarming amount of sugar.

  • Are your meals protein rich - this means there’s a good portion of a nutrient rich protein such as meat, fish or eggs?

  • Is the majority of the rest of your plate filled with vegetables? Salads are great as are cruciferous veg and dark leafy greens. Starchy veg should be consumed in smaller portions.

  • Are you drinking lots of water? This will help you stop snacking and also keep you hydrated and feeling lively and fresh.

  • Are you keeping active and doing regular resistance training? Body weight exercises or working out using weights is the single most effective way to lose weight around the middle.

Identify the changes you need to make and start to cut out the junk, simply focus on eating nutritious food and keep active. Your body will start to change without you realising it!

If you’re doing all of the above and still putting on weight around the middle it might be worth visiting your GP for all of the general checks - thyroid, blood test etc, to discuss the menopause and any options open to you.
